It was announced on Tuesday morning that Formula 1 wants to ban DRS in qualifying. This would particularly disadvantage Red Bull, as the DRS of Max Verstappen 's team would give them a significant advantage over the rest. Aston Martin Performance director Tom McCullough told GPblog among others, that they too want to make the DRS the same way as Red Bull.
All Formula 1 teams have a beam wing that stands a bit upright, and which ensures that the wind that has passed over a Formula 1 car is directed upwards. Red Bull has ensured that there is less drag from this beam wing, creating a huge jump in speed when the DRS flips open. Red Bull's concept is difficult to copy, so many teams cannot get the same performance out of the DRS.
However, Aston Martin has made an effort to catch up with Red Bull in terms of DRS. "I think the updates we brought to [Belgium] were actually sort of largely along those threads," McCullough said. "It's about the interaction of the whole back end of the car. If you look at the back of the car, everything's working together, whether it is the rear brake furniture, whether it's the diffuser, whether it's the beam and the rear wing. They're sucking everything out of the back of the car, and it's obviously the ratios that you play between those."
The Aston Martin performance director also saw at the beginning of last season that Red Bull was on top with their DRS, and knows that everyone will try to catch up with Red Bull to some extent.
