Nyck de Vries stated prior to the weekend of the Italian Grand Prix (when he did not yet know he would be making his Formula One debut) that he believes he deserves a place in Formula One. The Dutchman backed up his words by delivering an excellent qualifying and race, and that without any preparation time. It raises the question of how good De Vries really is.

De Vries reached Q2 in qualifying immediately and went faster than teammate Nicholas Latifi. In Sunday's race, De Vries finished eighth after a very solid race. It marked his first two World Championship points ever in Formula 1, with only one GP behind his name. Alexander Albon has scored a total of four World Championship points with Williams this year, Latifi is still pointless. Albon has consistently outperformed Latifi and has been praised for it, but De Vries has also managed to do the same.

De Vries excels

De Vries' performance is all the more impressive as all three top teams(Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc) were spared technical problems. Of the midfield teams, the 27-year-old driver had only Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly to contend with. The latter he might also have been able to overtake on his mediums without a safety car.

De Vries appears to have a serious chance of succeeding Latifi at Williams in 2023. Team boss Jost Capito praised the rookie and said De Vries' chances of winning Formula 1 will depend on him. What is De Vries capable of if he is allowed to sit in the Williams for a full season and also participate in full winter preparation? This weekend he was only told an hour and a half before FP3 that he would be stepping into the FW44.

Let us know your opinion on the statement: De Vries would score more World Championship points than Albon over a full season in 2023.
