Red Bull Racing managed to win in Qatar, but despite that, they didn't score the top mark.
Alfa Romeo, among others, have the edge over Red Bull. Only two teams received a failing grade for their performance in Qatar.
Red Bull Racing: 8
Red Bull Racing ran away with victory in Qatar. It's their 16th win of the season. Still, the Austrian constructors were not as dominant as other weekends and could even be caught with a few mistakes. For instance, the team had forgotten to inform the
FIA about the adjustment that needed to be made to Perez's car after the crash in the sprint race. The strategy for Perez and Verstappen in qualifying for the sprint race was also flawed.
Mercedes were very fast in Qatar after a somewhat weaker weekend in Suzuka. On Friday, the Mercedes drivers qualified well for Sunday's Grand Prix, although that was also due to mistakes by the
McLaren drivers. In the race on Sunday, however, things went wrong because of
Lewis Hamilton's action on
George Russell, but there was pretty little the team itself could do about this. However, the speed of the W14 was very good after the crash, so Russell managed to climb back to fourth place. There could have been more for Mercedes this weekend, but Hamilton put a stop to that.
Ferrari had a weaker weekend in Qatar. The Scuderia saw Mercedes gain in the constructors' championship, and that was partly due to the fact that
Carlos Sainz could not even compete in the Grand Prix due to a fuel leak. In terms of speed, the Italian team were also inferior compared to Mercedes and
McLaren.
Charles Leclerc made the most of the weekend with a fifth place, but for Ferrari to finish second in the World Championship, it will take more than what the Scuderia showed in Qatar.
Aston Martin seemed to have found some speed again in Qatar. The AMR23 more competitive than previous weekends in Italy, Singapore and Japan. Fernando Alonso qualified well in fourth and seemed to be on his way to a top-five result until the Spaniard himself made a mistake. In the end, Alonso scored eight points with his sixth-place finish, but despite a better weekend for Aston Martin, McLaren are chasing in the World Championship.
McLaren: 10
The McLaren team had their best weekend of the season so far in Qatar. The MCL60 was fast at the
Losail International Circuit, trailing
Max Verstappen by just 4.8 seconds at the end of the Grand Prix. The sprint race on Saturday was even won from the first starting spot, and on Sunday there were two McLaren drivers on the podium. An excellent weekend for McLaren.
Alpine: 7
Alpine had a fine weekend in Qatar. The French team scored good points for the championship with
Esteban Ocon's seventh-place finish. The French racing team were clearly the sixth team behind Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin, but nevertheless managed to pick up good points. In the championship, the team is in a kind of no man's land between McLaren and
Williams and there seems little more change to come.
Williams: 6
Williams failed to score any points for the third weekend in a row. In Qatar, the FW45 was not very competitive, and
Alexander Albon could do little special with it. The Williams car simply did not have enough downforce for all the high-speed corners in Qatar, but the team still managed to finish ahead of both Haas and AlphaTauri drivers. Albon did however manage to score two points in the sprint.
Alfa Romeo: 9
Alfa Romeo had perhaps their strongest weekend of the year in Qatar. Both
Valtteri Bottas and
Guanyu Zhou finished in the points. Zhou gained as many as 10 positions during the Grand Prix. With a total of six points scored in Qatar, the Swiss team struck an important blow in the battle for eighth place in the constructors' championship.
Haas: 5
Haas lack speed on Sundays, that has been clear all season. This is mainly because the VF-23 goes through the Pirelli tyres too quickly. However, there was little tyre wear in Qatar due to the maximum stint length, but despite that, the Americans could not score high.
AlphaTauri: 5
AlphaTauri had a difficult weekend in Qatar.
Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson both failed to impress with the AT04, and the best placing was only 15th. After the many points Alfa Romeo scored this weekend, the task of not finishing last in the championship seems almost impossible for AlphaTauri.
