No chance of a double diffuser in 2022: 'There's almost no room for that'

The chances are extremely slim that any team will have pulled something special out of its hat in 2022. According to Ross Brawn and Nikolas Tombazis, all the teams' ideas so far have been deemed good and there is nothing crazy among them.

New path for Formula 1

Formula 1 will look completely different in 2022 with a new set of aerodynamic regulations. F1 and the FIA have been working on these new regulations for a long time, making sure they are watertight. With Brawn at the helm, who himself managed to exploit many a grey area in the past, that seems to work out well in 2022.

The first year will certainly be a learning year for F1. Teams will seek out those grey areas and so F1 and the FIA will continue to test to stop things that are outside the rules. In the end, it's all about the racing. After all, that should be a lot better from 2022 onwards.

No double diffuser

In preparation for the season, the FIA has also already done a tour of all the teams. Individually, the cars were already discussed with the teams, according to Tombazis, Head of Chassis of the FIA, to Auto, Motor und Sport. The FIA wanted to avoid any nasty surprises at the start of the season.

''I can promise you that we have come across many different solutions, but nothing as big as the double diffuser from 2009,'' says Tombazis. The man who led the team with that double diffuser, Brawn, sees that there are far fewer gray areas today. So the room to do better than F1 is nil.
