Perez aware of mistake: "I am very sorry to my team"
- Toby McLuskie
Sergio Perez was the only driver to cause a red flag in a wet qualifying session this evening, as he crashed into the wall at turn three. The Mexican is aware of his mistake however and is ready to make amends in the Canadian Grand Prix tomorrow.
"Tomorrow we will try to limit the damage and attack from lap one onwards and see where we end up," he told Sky Sports after the session.
Mistake caused by brakes and tyres
Perez was struggling to compete with his teammate Max Verstappen, who claimed pole position but was still placing his car within the top ten in Q1, however, the mistake in Q2 ended his session early and means he will start from 13th tomorrow. The Red Bull driver highlighted the crash as his own mistake, stating, "I did a mistake from my side, so I am very sorry to my team. I let them down unfortunately, I am already thinking about tomorrow to hopefully recover and get into strong points."
He finished by explaining how the weather affected the performance of his car and potentially was one of the problems that caused him to crash. "I was struggling with the brakes, I think they were on the cold side. I had a lock-up into turn 10 the lap before and flat spotted them [the tyres], which probably meant I was out of shape going into turn three."
