Plans for
Silverstone to host the 1,000th Grand Prix have been abandoned after Liberty Media were warned about the British weather.
The 2019 season, dubbed as the ‘year of the 1,000th Grand Prix’ will see
Formula 1 surpass the milestone. It’ll be just the 3rd race on the calendar when the counter adds a fourth figure.
Plans were made for the race calendar to be altered so that Silverstone, the location of the first ever Grand Prix, could host the 1,000th fixture. But according to Liberty Media, this has been altered.
“Silverstone was the first Grand Prix and we would have liked to see the 1,000th go back to the first,” Bratches told Reuters.
“I think there's a nice story and a nice harmony there. But when I was told, being a relatively new Brit that the weather is sub-optimal in April, they warded me off that quickly.”
To a lot of fans in Britain, April brings out the classic saying “April showers”, so it won’t come as a surprise to hear this.
It’s likely that China will play host to the 1,000th showing. It hosted the 3rd race this season and it will be the 17th year in Shanghai.
“We’ve spent a lot of time on this topic and looking at different circumstances, weather patterns,” Bratches added.
“China is a great place to race. It’s part of our future and we’re excited about going there for that particular race.”
