Drugovich joins Aston Martin as new reserve driver
- GPblog.com
Felipe Drugovich is stepping into Formula 1 as Aston Martin's reserve driver. The Brazilian will be the first driver in the team's new development programme.
Drugovich won the 2022 Formula 2 championship at Monza on Saturday. Until now, the young driver has not been part of an F1 team, but that is about to change. Aston Martin has signed the driver as their new reserve driver. Drugovich signed the contract on the Saturday of his F2 victory.
The team also plans to have Drugovich take part in the first free practice for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He will also take part in the Young Driver test at the Abu Dhabi circuit in November. The F2 champion responds to the news in Aston Martin's press release.
"Becoming a member of the AMF1 Driver Development Programme is a fantastic opportunity for me – and only adds to what has been an extremely enjoyable and successful 2022 season. Winning in Formula 2 has long been regarded as the best possible launchpad into a career in Formula One, and I see my role at AMF1 as giving me all the tools to take that crucial next step. For me, 2023 will be a learning curve: I will be working with the F1 team, but my primary goal is to learn and develop as a driver. I hope that will give me an opportunity to race in Formula One in the future."
