Lawrence Stroll has expressed hopes of seeing 'his' Aston Martin on the podium with the two AMR23s for the first time in Canada, just as Mercedes managed to do two weeks back in Spain. However, Helmut Marko considers that to be impossible after speaking to the Austrian Krone Zeitung the day before the Canadian Grand Prix weekend starts.

Fernando Alonso has been on the podium five times already this season, Lance Stroll none yet. The 24-year-old driver's last podium finish dates back to the Sakhir Grand Prix in late 2020. For Aston Martin, it would be the first double podium finish and so Stroll Sr. is incredibly looking forward to that milestone. However, Marko does not think it is feasible for now.

Marko on Aston Martin

"That is more than overconfident, that is unrealistic," Marko says of Aston Martin having to beat at least one RB19 on a Sunday. According to the 80-year-old consultant, Red Bull really is still a lot better, also suggesting that it doesn't help that Stroll is so much slower than his teammate. "They have a solid car, but if you look at the points difference, you have to be honest and say that it is only Alonso who is reaping the rewards. He is always good for a podium finish."

Alonso occupies third place in the world championship with 99 points. Stroll, who is racing in his own country this weekend and thus knows the track very well, has to make do with eighth place and 35 points. His significant deficit is mainly due to a P12 in Miami and a DNF in Monaco. Aston Martin is also no longer the number two in the world championship since the Spanish Grand Prix due to the big points difference between the two teammates. That is now Mercedes.
