Former Formula One driver Paul di Resta has issued a warning to Pierre Gasly about the "ruthless" Helmut Marko, as the Frenchman prepares for his 2019 Red Bull switch.

Gasly will be taking Daniel Ricciardo's seat for next season, with the young driver making the step up from Red Bull's junior team, Toro Rosso.

The 23-year-old will be driving alongside Max Verstappen, 21, in a very youthful looking Red Bull Racing line-up.

Former F1 driver and now Sky Sports F1 pundit, di Resta has issued a warning to Gasly over the "ruthlessness" of boss Marko.

"If Marko chooses someone, he will take it seriously," di Resta explained to Motorsport. "But in front of every rider he gets promoted, there is also a driver he drops, he is pretty ruthless in. Some were fired (too early), when I was not sure they deserved something like that. You only have a chance, if he feels that you really deserve it."

Fellow Sky F1 pundit Martin Brundle has defended the Red Bull boss, claiming the drivers he's brought through in the past have been outstanding.

"With (Sebastian) Vettel, Ricciardo and Verstappen, you cannot say that he really did anything wrong," Brundle explained. However, he does see his colleague's point slightly about the patience of Marko: "People like Buemi and Vergne have not been given enough time in F1."
