Hulkenberg questions how the Halo is being used
Charlie Whiting has defended Formula 1's use of the Halo safety device despite claims that it restricts the drivers ability to leave the car quickly.
The debabte on the Halo has been sparked by Nico Hulkenbergs crash at yesterdays race in Abu Dhabi. Hulkenberg said that "I could not get myself out."
"On the right side was the wall and on my left was the Halo." (www.wheels24.co.za)
However, FIA race director Charlie Whiting doesn't believe that the Halo restricted the driver leaving the car. When speaking to Autosport Whiting said, "Quite clearly that's one of the sort of accidents the Halo was designed to help with."
"It provides more space for the driver once the car is upside down."
When talking about the procedure to ensure the drivers are ok Whiting said that "It was very controlled and our medical delegate was very happy with the way it was done."
Hulkenberg said that he "I don't know how different it would have been without the Halo. I can't answer that."
"Either way the Halo is there so we have to put up with it." (www.wheels.co.za)
Many people in the sport wonder what would have happened if the fire was bigger and was unable to be extinguished. It is clear that a way of getting the drivers out quicker in certain situations is an issue that needs to be looked into.
