An iconic Niki Lauda helmet to be auctioned during Miami race weekend
Niki Lauda is a respected former Formula 1 driver. The Austrian became a three-time world champion, but he is also known for his violent crash at the 1976 German Grand Prix. For those who have money and were fans of Lauda, something interesting will happen during the race weekend in Miami, as the helmet the Formula 1 legend had on during his crash will be auctioned off during that race weekend.
Heavy crash for Lauda
Many Formula 1 fans are familiar with Lauda's horrific accident at the Nürburgring. The car caught fire almost immediately, yet Lauda miraculously survived.
It was extra special because Lauda himself tried to cancel the race before it took place. The then Ferrari driver felt it was an unsafe situation due to the rain, the poor safety measures and the lack of doctors and medical helicopters on the track. The race went ahead after all, being one vote short of a boycott.
Auction for Lauda's helmet
The auction will be done in a tent at Bonhams/Cars. Those who want the helmet will have to pay a lot. Indeed, it's expected to fetch between $50,000 and $60,000.
