McLaren CEO Brown advises Red Bull: 'I'd consider parting ways with Perez'

Sergio Perez shook his head in Q1 of qualifying for the British GP. No, he did not want to get out; rather, the marshals around his stranded car had to help him get away from the gravel. But in Formula 1, there is a rule: there should be no outside help to get a car back on track. After several minutes of trying in vain to free himself from the gravel, Perez gave up anyway. With his head bowed and full of frustration, the Mexican got out of his Red Bull Racing RB20.

Just at the weekend when it became clear that Perez is not at all sure of a seat at the Austrian team for '25 - despite a newly signed contract - Perez completely fell through the ice. Not for the first time this season, as after a fine start, Max Verstappen's teammate has been mostly found at the back of the field in recent weeks.

Brown sees Perez plodding on a weekly basis

Perez's not doing so well is slowly putting pressure on Red Bull's first place in the constructors' championship. Moreover, Verstappen has to face the competition, especially two McLarens, on his own every race. The CEO of that team, Zak Brown, has seen that too. If he were in the shoes of Christian Horner (Red Bull Racing team principal), he would consider sidelining Perez.

Brown told the likes of GPblog: "I would be, which I'm sure they are, very concerned about the lack of performance. But I like Sergio, so I wouldn't want to comment further on that," Brown said. Perez incidentally began his F1 career in 2013 with McLaren's team, but there he had to leave after one season due to disappointing performances.
