Verstappen's statement makes Hamilton laugh: 'He's way ahead, right?'
Max Verstappen has often complained about how his Red Bull car performs in 2024. The Dutchman even said his chances of winning the World Championship this season were unrealistic. Lewis Hamilton didn't seem to fully understand the reigning world champion's statement and was surprised.
Verstappen's statement is based on his recent loss of ground in the championships. Lando Norris's McLaren senses a chance. With eight Grands Prix and three sprint races remaining, he has a 62-point gap to bridge. Hamilton believes Verstappen still has a substantial points lead over the competition.
Hamilton reacts to Verstappen's statement
"He said it's unrealistic for him to get one of the two titles. Wow. I mean that's his opinion, That's obviously what he's feeling in that moment, but he's pretty far ahead," the seven-time world champion said, laughing to GPblog and other media. "I don't really know what to say about it," the Brit concluded.
Verstappen's gap to Norris in the drivers' standings is 62 points, but the difference between McLaren and Red Bull in points in the constructors' standings is a lot smaller. McLaren are only eight points behind the Austrians. Next weekend is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. After that, there are seven more weekends on the calendar.
