Verstappen backs Newey's criticism of British media: "100% agree"
During the 2021 season, Max Verstappen was not happy with Sky Sports coverage of the championship battle between himself and Lewis Hamilton, where the network sided with the British driver. Adrian Newey recently also stood up for Max Verstappen, something that was very much appreciated by Verstappen.
Newey talked about the British-centered coverage of Sky Sports in the High Performance podcast. According to the top designer, Sky have a bigger influence on the F1 scene then just being a British broadcaster. "Maybe that's also a little bit of the British media, if I'm honest. Sky have a huge influence around the world. Their viewing is truly international. But their coverage is quite nationalistic, dare I say. That can have an influence. It's this thing that now with journalism, don't take this personally, but there is that trend to either put people on a pedestal or knock them down," Newey declared.
Verstappen agrees with Newey
The Dutchman, who previously said how much he enjoyed working with Newey, appretiates the Briton's words. Asked whether he thinks he was demonised by British media, the defending world champion could only agree. "One hundred per cent," Verstappen told GPblog among others in Baku.
"Newey and I get along well, we have worked together for a long time," he added. The British expert will leave Red Bull Racing in March 2025. Verstappen has previosly expressed that he is sad to see Newey go, but also underlined he cannot stop anyone from pursuing new ambitions.
