Lewis Hamilton fails to escape Q1 in United States Grand Prix qualifying

Lewis Hamilton was tipped as one of the favourites for pole position, but the seven-time World Champion didn't even make it out of the first part of qualifying. Hamilton will start the United States Grand Prix from 18th place on the grid, behind his former teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Disaster for Hamilton

Hamilton was impressed with the upgrades Mercedes introduced on Friday. He believed he would've got pole position for the sprint race if it wasn't for the yellow flags which slowed him down. But qualifying on Saturday was worse for the British driver.

Hamilton made a mistake at turn 12 and wasn't fast enough to escape the danger zone. It's the second time Hamilton has failed to escape Q1 in the 2024 Formula 1 season and the first time he has qualified outside the top five at COTA. Hamilton will start behind Sauber driver Bottas in Sunday's United States Grand Prix.
