F1's technical director Andrew James is stepping down at the end of the month after a 25-year tenure. He played a non-negligible role in many of the processes and technical systems that ensured Formula One could be broadcast in its own unique way.

Broadcasting

James helped build the ultra-modern broadcast center, where he had quite a few problems that waited solving. He also oversaw the relocation of Suzuka's media and technology center. This was necessary as a typhoon raged through Japan in 2019, seriously threatening the organisation of the F1 event.

Loss of a mainstay

He was also responsible for F1 now being able to carry out its broadcasts remotely. Something that was initially only needed as a COVID-measure, but one that could become a permanent solution for the future. James says to Motorsport-total.com: "During my time in Formula 1 I have had the privilege of tackling many exciting projects with a great team. I'm very proud to have been part of that, but now I'm moving on. I hope the company and staff continue to deliver the excellent product that excites the fans."

Formula One sports boss Ross Brawn also praised James. Among other things, he called him a "pillar of our organisation" and, according to Brawn, made a "huge contribution" during 25 his years. "Without his skills, dedication and passion we would not be where we are today," he said.
