Leclerc and Alonso unfairly compared: 'He's still making too many mistakes'

Former Ferrari sporting director Cesare Fiorio thinks Carlos Sainz is already on the level of Charles Leclerc. The Italian believes Ferrari have started the new season strongly and speaks highly of Sainz's class.
Sainz as good as Leclerc
Sainz is in his first year at Ferrari. The Spaniard came over from McLaren last winter after two successful years with the British team. In those years he managed to score his first two podiums. In 2021 he replaced Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari.
Sainz is doing well at his new team according to Fiorio, but he still needs to work on his qualifying. "In my opinion, he is very strong in the race and is on the same level as Leclerc. In qualifying he still makes mistakes, but that's probably because he still needs to get to know the car better", Fiorio told FormulaPassion.it.
Alonso and Leclerc not comparable
Because Leclerc is very fast over one lap and because he often gets more out of the car than the car is actually capable of, the Monegasque is sometimes compared to Fernando Alonso. Fiorio thinks this is not justified. "He can get a lot out of his car indeed, but he still makes too many mistakes. Alonso made a lot less mistakes", concludes Fiorio.
