Russell gets same treatment as Hamilton: "That has been made clear to me"

George Russell saw his seat at Mercedes become a reality last week. He will drive next year alongside Lewis Hamilton and will get the chance to fight for the world championship with Hamilton and Max Verstappen. At least that is what Mercedes told the young Briton.

According to Russell he and Hamilton will be treated as equals next year. He said this during today's press conference before the weekend in Monza. MotorsportWeek quotes the Brit.

"We will be equals. That has been made clear to me. Of course I have high hopes, but I know it won't be easy next to Lewis - he's a seven-time champion! I see my partnership with Mercedes as something for the long term. I see next year as a great opportunity to learn. We are at different stages of our careers, but the aim is to drive the team forward together."

Mercedes wants to avoid a repeat of Rosberg

Because if there's anything right now that Mercedes isn't waiting for, that's it. A repeat of moves. As Russell also knows. "Mercedes has had the experience of a tricky dynamic (between Rosberg and Hamilton). They've made it clear they don't want that anymore. I don't want that either. We don't know who will have the best car next year. So the most important thing is working together to make sure we are strong in 2022. I have a lot of respect for Lewis in that, because I'm a lot younger and was watching him when I was still driving karts."

In any case, it looks like Verstappen will have a formidable rival for next year. Whether Russell will actually be treated equally, something Valtteri Bottas can only dream of, remains to be seen.

My first symptoms of ALS occurred in 2014, but was diagnosed in 2016. I had severe symptoms ranging from shortness of breath, balance problems, couldn't walk without a walker or a power chair, i had difficulty swallowing and fatigue. I was given medications which helped but only for a short burst of time, then I decided to try alternative measures and began on ALS Formula treatment from Tree of Life Health clinic. It has made a tremendous difference for me (Visit w w w. treeoflifeherbalclinic .com ). I had improved walking balance, increased appetite, muscle strength, improved eyesight and others. ]

Well, its for Russell to proof to the team who should rightly be the No 1 driver at the team.
Its for him to out qualify and drive away from or keep ahead of Hamilton in the first few races of the year to show to the team that there is a new No 1 driver at the team.
Do exactly what your good friend, Charles did to a 4-times WDC when he went to Ferrari and totally dominated him in 2019 .... and 2020 too, of course, but by then, he knew that he has already lost his seat for 2021 and could not wait for the season to be over.
By then, he was just turning up during race weekends to fulfil obligations so that his bank account can be $57 Million richer by the end of the year.

Totally agree and should that be the case I dont see Hamilton seeing out the season with announcing an early retirement after 3-4 races with an excuse other than the obvious for his followers to find comfort in.

How else will they try to compete with Verstappen given that Hamilton is being toyed by him?
Why would you be a no 2 to an already substandard driver?
Toto is desperate to find someone capable of competing with Max.

The question of equality in Mercedes is ridiculous and shouldn't even exist. Merc is one of only a few handful of teams(past and present) that allow parity between their drivers, who are left to make the difference. Bottas got the same treatment but his win ratio was not good enough. He should at least have been finishing 2nd behind Lewis in all seasons if the car was the deciding factor
