Cyril Abiteboul confirms that Renault did not make Fernando Alonso to drive for them in the 2019 season.

Abiteboul says that the soon-to-be retiring Alonso couldn't be guarenteed a winning car, so the team did not bother offering the Spaniard a contract for next season.

Alonso announced his retirement from the sport at the end of the season recently, as the McLaren driver is tired of waiting for his team's revival to happen.

The former Renault man has already had two spells at the French side, and that makes it obviously a very easy rumour to make up, but Abiteboul believes an offer would have been pointless as they wouldn't have been able to meet Alonso's high expectations.

"Franly, despite the fact that I have huge respect for Fernando, who is probably one of the best drivers in the world, the answer is no," Abiteboul told Crash.net.

"We could feel that he is at the point in his career where he wants a car that is immediately capable of going in for wins. That is what he is expecting, or there is going to be more frustration.

"We are not in that position. We need to have drivers who can understand the project, who can buy into a support the project on a long-term basis.

"I don't think this is what Fernando was looking for. So the short answer is no."
