Fernando Alonso has explained how he intended to go "flat out" around the final corner which eventually caused him to run wide, ruining his hot lap.
McLaren's other driver Stoffel Vandoorne had been knocked out in Q1 which left Alonso out alone. He put all his eggs in one basket to try and progress into Q3.
The Spaniard wasn't too disappointed about his mistake as he admits his tyre situation should help in tomorrow's Grand Prix.
"I went wide because I was two-tenths slower [already]," Alonso said in an interview on PlanetF1.
"I know the television is a big fan of putting the replays, but they should be able to trace the lap time, that I was slower. And I tried something different, being flat out there.
"We had one set less of ultra-softs. We chose to have two yellows [softs]. We ran one in Q2, and it was not too bad. It felt good and should be a good help for tomorrow."
You can't exactly blame Fernando Alonso. He had nothing to lose in that situation, but everything to gain. Getting into Q3 would have been triumphant for the Woking-based team who have struggled in the past three races.
Alonso hasn't completed those last three races and starting from 13th on the grid will help. He qualified in 14th but moved up due to Charles Leclerc's penalty.
The last time the 36-year-old made it into Q3 was in Monaco.
