McLaren faced a lot of criticism last weekend. It started with 'chocolate gate' and moved on to their bad performance on Saturday and Sunday. Plenty of people in the media have called for a reshuffling of personnel at the top, and some claimed this was impossible.
Reports also came out that staff were planning a revolt and even a mass exodus. But
Fernando Alonso has stood up for his team and slammed the media for the negativity.
"A weekend like that, the only problem is the media attention it attracts, and the lack of normal conversation goes into the bad news or good news, and everything is exaggerated," Alonso said in an interview on F1i.
"We had quite a poor weekend in terms of performance; uncompetitive on Friday, uncompetitive on Saturday, uncompetitive on Sunday. We are the first ones to know that.
"At the same time, we are not last. We are not getting worse and worse. We are not the worst team in the paddock."
Alonso then turned towards the championship standings proving his point. McLaren are in fifth, and the Spaniard is in 8th.
But there's no hiding from the fact that the papaya orange car hasn't scored a World Championship point since Spain. Before, Alonso had scored in every single race.
How good will a good performance feel for McLaren this weekend? Very good. Perhaps a top 8 finish or a double points result will feel as a good as a win.
