Valtteri Bottas has taken his first pole of the season in Austria as Mercedes made it back-to-back one-two finishes in qualifying, with both Ferrari's manning the second starting row and Romain Grosjean ending in P6.

Q1

The first of the three sessions had little surprise at the top of the field. Mercedes led with a one-two, with Lewis Hamilton leading Valtteri Bottas.
What was interesting though, was Romain Grosjean sitting in P4. The Frenchman was rapid on the Red Bull Ring in Q1, leaving both Red Bulls as well as Sebastian Vettel behind him.
At the back of the field, a surprising name didn’t make it to Q2. Sergio Perez struggled massively in his Force India, even sitting in last place up until the last minutes, when he climbed to P17, just behind Stoffel Vandoorne, who again couldn’t beat his teammate Fernando Alonso. Vandoorne remains the only driver who hasn’t beaten his teammate in qualifying.
The other three drivers who lost out were Sergey Sirotkin, Brendon Hartley and Marcus Ericsson.

Q2

The second of the three rounds revealed the tyre strategies of the top three teams. While Ferrari stayed with the ultrasofts, the softest tyre available, Mercedes and Red Bull switched to supersofts.
Mercedes again topped the round with a one-two, followed by the two Ferrari’s. Verstappen and Ricciardo were split up by Romain Grosjean, who again showed magnificent pace on the Red Bull Ring in his Haas. Both the Haas cars made it to Q3, as well as both Renaults.
However, Nico Hülkenberg made it through at the death. He sat in P11 until the chequered flag waved, but the German just about squeezed Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon out of Q3.

Q3

The session that matters most. Valtteri Bottas was the one who came out guns blazing early. He led Lewis Hamilton, as his British teammate never got past the Fin in terms of lap time. That's odd, seeing that Hamilton led the first two sessions, as well as the Free Practices.
The biggest surprise, though, was Romain Grosjean. He suddenly put in a P3-worthy lap halfway through Q3, putting him above both Red Bulls as well as Sebastian Vettel. Vettel and Verstappen managed to beat the Frenchman's time as the checkered flag waved, but the Haas will still start above Daniel Ricciardo, who never looked comfortable in his RB14 throughout all of the qualifying in Spielberg.
Will this mean that Mercedes will cruise to another victory? Or can one of the Ferrari's, who start on softer tyres tomorrow, make an early move and take the race from there? We're excited for tomorrow's action!
