Eric Boullier, technical director for
McLaren recognises the fact his team seem to be stronger in the races than any other session. He also insists that race strategy is the most significant element going into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Having a good qualifying session is fundamental for the race in the streets of Baku. With some drivers calling it tighter than Monaco, overtaking can be a risky business.
“Overtaking is at a premium, so - we don’t underestimate the importance of our starting grid slots for Sunday’s race,” Boullier explains the importance.
It has to be said, it’s not something McLaren have done well in 2018. Going into Melbourne they were aiming for 100% attendance in Q3, so far they are at 0%.
“We must keep our heads down, push hard and take any and every opportunity that comes our way,” he added.
“Both of our drivers have raced brilliantly in the first Grands Prix of the season.”
Despite this poor qualifying statistic, McLaren has managed to pick up 28 World Championship points, with Spanish driver Fernando Alonso consistently finishing in the points.
“We know our package tends to deliver more on Sundays, so the important thing will be to react quickly to anything that happens,” Boullier said acknowledging this feat.
“On a track where drama and action seem to have become almost par for the course in Baku given last year’s events, strategy will be a key factor in next weekend’s race."
