A new generation of cars was introduced to Formula 1 in 2022. These cars should make the grid more competitive, and increase the action on the track, through more overtaking. The latter is becoming more and more of a problem. Nikolas Tombazis, director of the FIA's single-seater classes, tells Motorsport.com that it is looking at improving this problem again from 2025.

With the previous generations of cars, it became increasingly difficult to overtake other cars. Partly because of this, the FIA decided to change the regulations. With the new regulations, there would be less dirty air coming off the cars, so less downforce would be lost in the corners. This would make it easier to follow other cars, which should lead to more action on the track

As teams have developed the cars the cars do now release more dirty air. Tombazis says that before the new regulations, 50% of the aerodynamic load was lost. By 2022, this would have decreased to 20%, but by now the cars are already at 35% load.

Adjusting F1 cars in 2025?

The FIA is now working to come up with a plan against this problem. Tombazis says: "We have identified some parts of the cars to act on, such as the endplate of the front wing, the side of the floor and the fins inside the wheels (around the brake ducts). We could lay down somewhat more restrictive rules in these areas."
