Sergio Perez is under enormous pressure at
Red Bull Racing. The Mexican recently extended his contract at the Austrian racing stable, but since then he has been performing very poorly. Former Red Bull driver
Pierre Gasly understands the enormous pressure from Red Bull that Perez seems to be under at the moment.
"He is a good driver. Everyone knows that but he doesn't seem to get his act together, whether it's down to himself or the team. I don't know and can't really comment on that," Gasly told press including GPblog.
Gasly was in the same boat as Perez
Perez started the season strongly, but has now been overtaken in the standings by
Lando Norris,
Charles Leclerc,
Carlos Sainz and
Oscar Piastri, and
George Russell and
Lewis Hamilton are only slightly behind. Perez's teammate
Max Verstappen tops the standings with a big lead. Gasly sees little chemistry left between Red Bull and the man from Guadalajara.
"When you feel strong in a car, for whatever reason, you have an off weekend. The next weekend you come back, feel good, drive strong laps and don't even think about it anymore," Gasly added.
"But clearly there is something missing between the two at the moment." Gasly was Verstappen's teammate at Red Bull in 2019, but was transferred back to Toro Rosso after six months. The Frenchman acknowledges that the pressure at the top team is enormous. "I think my situation was slightly different from his (Perez's), but it is clear that he is under huge pressure. At the moment, his problem is that he doesn't feel the car," Gasly said.
