Pierre Gasly had a power unit failure in Free Practice 2 yesterday, but engine producer
Honda have stated that this is no concern to the team as they were already going to change the power unit regardless.
It looked like the same old story with Honda when we saw Pierre Gasly lose power in his Toro Rosso, as he pulled to the side of the road and had to be wheeled back to the garage. His power unit had given up on him, as has been the case too often with Honda since they made their comeback to the F1.
However, Honda boss Toyoharu Tanabe has revealed that they were already going to change the power unit on Gasly's car regardless, which means that not all is lost. The only thing that was annoying is that Toro Rosso couldn't do any race simulations during FP2.
“Pierre had to park at the side of the track when we spotted something unusual on the data,” Tanabe told PlanetF1.
“However, as both drivers were running ‘Friday only’ units, it was always our plan to change the units on both cars overnight.”
No problem then for Gasly, it looks like, although some people had a different suspicion why he might have ended his session early!
We can confirm this was not done to allow Pierre to watch the football...
