Haas managed to split the Red Bulls in yesterday's qualifying session. Red Bull, at their home circuit, have seemingly been struggling for pace all weekend. Romain Grosjean was the man to cause the trouble, finishing ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, and just behind Max Verstappen.
Kevin Magnussen also had a strong session finishing just behind Ricciardo in his Haas. The American team take part in their 50th Grand Prix race later today.
The shockwaves were sent through the paddock as Haas went on to achieve the 'best of the rest' medal. Renault thought they had this wrapped up last weekend. Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg admit they have some concerns about their pace.
"They are more in the frontrunners' league than in ours," Sainz told Autosport. "They were 0.4s faster in Paul Ricard in qualifying - I expected them to be 0.4s ahead here. It's a shorter track and [the gap] is 0.8s. It's a bit too much for us, and we're not happy about it."
"Yesterday [practice] that was confirmed and the gap behind was pretty big," Hulkenberg said. "We've done a good job of turning ourselves around quite well - but we don't have enough to compete with them."
Pierre Gasly said: "I am shocked" about the Haas pace. In their 50th Grand Prix, there's no better opportunity to score some serious points today for Haas. Grosjean has the best chance of scoring his first points of the season.
