Lewis Hamilton is the current championship leader but admits he will struggle to remain in this position on Sunday as Ferrari are fastest on pure pace.
It was Hamilton’s first race win since October 2017, a monkey that he has now managed to get off his back. The Brit is 4 points from 2nd placed Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton knows that Mercedes will have to change this if they are to remain at the top.
“Leading the championship is great, but if we continue as we are, it will take a lot of lucky races to keep me here,” Lewis told Marca.
“And you can’t expect that for the next 17 races.”
The four-time World Champion admitted himself straight after the race in Baku that he got lucky and his team-mate, Bottas, deserved the race win. That was no secret and it’s also no secret that Ferrari is faster.
“Their pure pace is much better than ours at the moment.
“By no means do we have a bad car, but we need to improve it to make it easier to drive. I felt really good in Australia but it hasn’t worked out since then and I’m not sure why.”
