Lewis Hamilton looked set to become an eight-time World Champion, but a late twist in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix gave Max Verstappen one last chance to overtake and the Dutchman took that chance with both hands. The Brit responds after losing the title for the first time since taking it in 2017.

Big congrats

Lewis Hamilton was quick to offer his congratulations to his rival Max Verstappen. The Brit also congratulated his own team for their hard work across the season. Mercedes won the constructors championship for an eighth consecutive season.

"Big congrats to Max and his team. We did a great job, all the men and women we have, have worked hard. I am so proud of them and so grateful. We gave it everything, we never gave up and that's the most important thing," Hamilton said in the post-session interview.

Hamilton is contracted to race in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Hamilton looks ahead and wishes everyone a good Christmas.

"I've been feeling good these past couple of months. If I am honest, I want people to stay safe and we'll see about next year," he added.

You're an idiot!!! I bet you even look like one

Lewis always says that. It's bull, he's a fake and one of the most insincere of all time. He's the media darling.

I bet horner will have a sore arse later. Cheat cheat cheat all the way. Verstappen will probably kill someone with his aggressive driving if he doesn't kill himself first.

I still cannot understand some of the comments here. Great finish, great pass by Max, and great sportsmanship by Lewis. And yet haters find something to hate in this.

The reaction you would expect from a great champion. Did nothing wrong today but this is also part of racing. I think we have a deserved WC and some excitement to look forward to next years.

Lewis won the race. Red Bull can't feel good about this GIFTED WIN!

Masi didn't even follow the FIA own rules. Can't get anymore blatant than this in terms of cheating.

I can't believe what I've just witnessed, the FIA have just handed Verstappen the world championship. It was obvious who would win on that last lap because Hamilton was on very old tyres there was no way he could beat Verstappen from a standing start. I believe the powers that b couldn't stand Lewis beating Shumachers record. And I bet they couldn't believe there luck Lewis won that fare & square,if that had been the other way round Red Bull would b kicking up such a stink right now. Yet look how Lewis reacted what a sportsman. Look out Max this is hopefully the Last W championship u will ever have because u won this by default

King why didn't they allow all the lapped cars?Im hurt but to a certain degree since FIA broke their own rules which are in black and white. So they know what they wanted. The best option for that to be neutral was a red flag.

It's a wrap! Lewis will retire early after this season. The body language in that interview is all too familiar (2012 Singapore GP).
