Karun Chandhok remains the only driver from India to ever compete in Formula 1. His home country hosted three consecutive race weekends between 2011 and 2013 but then disappeared from the programme. Chandhok is hopeful that the India GP will return one day, he told in the Beyond the Grid Podcast.
For three years, the race took place at the Buddh International Circuit, located in Greater Noida. Sebastian Vettel reigned supreme in the seasons, managing to pull off no fewer than three wins on behalf of Red Bull Racing, before India lost the race weekend again.
"There’s a few historical issues to do with legislation and taxes with the government that need to be resolved," Chandhok explained in the podcast. "Ultimately, the government never got behind the race like it has in most other countries, whether it’s the state government or the central government."
Should India ever apply for Formula One again, it does seem that it will have to compete against other circuits. Indeed, Stefano Domenicali revealed that he sees the 24 GPs scheduled for next season as the maximum number.
