Christian Horner has said that Red Bull will not make a decision on their engine supplier until next month at the earliest, despite Renault’s Cyril Abiteboul wanting to know by May 15.
May 15 is the FIA’s deadline for notice of supply, and Abiteboul wants to know Red Bull’s decision so it knows how many parts to supply.
Red Bull have also been having talks with Honda, after encouraging signs from the Japanese manufacturer with junior team Toro Rosso.
Pierre Gasly finished fourth in Bahrain with a Honda engine, so it is clear there is potential for Red Bull to break their long relationship with Renault, whom they won four Constructors’ titles with between 2010 and 2013.
When asked about the decision, Horner replied: “It won’t be in May.
“Cyril’s comments about bits? Well he is always short of bits anyway, so putting in an order for a few more parts isn’t going to do them any harm.
“Our decision making will be at the earliest in June. You always want a clearer picture before you make a commitment.
“That is what we are trying to achieve.”
