If the
Australian Grand Prix continues as planned,
Mercedes will be in the spotlight.
Aston Martin Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner says he has already informed Toto Wolff they will submit a protest about the duel-axis system.
Lewis Hamilton and
Valtteri Bottas were both pulling and pushing the steering wheel to use the DAS system. The Dual-Axis Steering system allows for the 'toe' of the tires to be adjusted, allowing the team to make significant gains on the straight and when warming up the tires. However,
Red Bull Racing considers this illegal.
Red Bull on the attack
That is not surprising. First, Red Bull seems to be the biggest competitor for Mercedes during the 2020
Formula 1 season for the title, but more importantly; Red Bull's own innovation ensures that the DAS system is almost impossible to copy.
Christian Horner has already indicated this to the competition. "If we see that they use it, we will immediately file a protest and I already told Toto Wolff," Horner told Auto, Motor und Sport.
Coronavirus may make it unnecessary
The question is whether it will be necessary because for the time being it does not seem that the
Australian Grand Prix will take place this weekend. McLaren retired after a staff member tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, and now the FIA, F1 and the Australian organisation are discussing the next steps.
