Nico Hulkenberg has admitted that he won't get to drive for a top team in Formula One saying that they don't have a "big appetite" for him. The German was linked with a move to Ferrari several seasons ago but talks of a big-time move have long since stopped.
Speaking to Sky F1, the Renault driver admitted that the time in his career in which to make the jump to a big team is realistically over.
“I’m sceptical that this is going to happen between me and one of the three big teams, just looking at it realistically.
“I think there’s so many chances you have in a career and I don’t get the sense that they have a big appetite for me too.
“These are the facts, I think.”
Despite the frank admission, Hulkenberg hasn't lost hope of securing a race-winning driver with Renault, a project he says he enjoys being a part of and hopes will grow into a big team in their own right.
“I’m very much interested to achieve it together with Renault and really work ourselves up there.
“We’re trying to work our way up there, it still takes some time.
“If we get the best out of ourselves and beat the midfield, that’s good for the moment but obviously with time we want to become more competitive and get closer to the big guys.”
