Max Verstappen is really the new
Formula 1 world champion. During the
FIA gala in Paris, the Dutchman received the trophy that goes with the world title in the premier class of motorsport. Another historic moment in a historic week for Dutch motorsport.
Long evening
It was a coming and going of champions from the most diverse motorsport classes. At the end of the long evening - after dozens of drivers had been put in the limelight - a beaming
Max Verstappen was presented with the beautiful trophy by FIA president Jean Todt.
In the presence of girlfriend Kelly and team boss
Christian Horner, Verstappen was asked how it sounds to be a champion?
"My life goal has been achieved! Everything that comes next is a bonus. I will stay in F1 for a few more years, mind you. I saw the images of me and my dad, travelling around Europe. And then now being successful in F1.... I'm so happy to be able to celebrate with my friends and family. It's been amazing. I've enjoyed the season immensely. Lewis and I pushed each other to the limit, sometimes over it. But we have a lot of respect for each other. I can't wait for next year."
Major absentees
Valtteri Bottas was present to collect his trophy at spot three in the championship. His teammate
Lewis Hamilton was missing, as was Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. The award for the winning constructors was collected by technical director
James Allison.
De Vries also receives award
In the wake of Verstappen,
Nyck de Vries was also honored. He became
Formula E champion this season. In his acceptance speech, the Friesian said it was a rollercoaster season, with some setbacks, and that he is very proud to be in Paris.
