Robert Kubica has confirmed he signed a deal to drive for
Ferrari in 2012. The current Williams reserve driver is still looking for his return to
Formula 1 following his rallying crash in 2011.
Kubica, 33, last raced in F1 for Renault. The Polish driver has featured in FP1 twice this season and is scheduled to do so again soon. Speaking in an interview with Formula 1, Kubica revealed what was happening at the time of his accident.
"The biggest thing was that that rally was actually going to be my last one, as the team I was going to drive for in 2012 wouldn't have let me rally," Kubica remembered.
"Renault allowed me to go do this rally as they felt guilty over me having a lot of car failures. I didn't actually want to go do that rally, flying to Milan, driving here, driving there, all that effort, but I did do it."
To date, Kubica has entered 76 F1 races and looks to extend that number next season. Tom Clarkson asked Kubica directly whether it was the red team which he had signed for in 2012.
"Yes, it was a red team [Ferrari]. This isn't new, this news had been already published then - I don't know if Fernando [Alonso] knew. I would have been paid less than at Renault"
Ferrari stuck with Felipe Massa and Alonso for the 2012 season. Kubica seriously damaged his arm in the accident but isn't letting this ruin his dream of returning to the sport he loves.
