The Formula One teams are currently busy perfecting their bolides for the new season, which introduces major rule changes. For Mercedes, too, it is still a big question mark how its performance will compare with the rest. According to Hywel Thomas, boss of the team's engine department, the engineers are "desperate" to see how the power unit performs in the new W13.
The new Formula One cars are different in many areas. For example, the aerodynamics are changing significantly and the teams are experiencing a loss of power due to the new E10 fuel. According to Thomas, this will also change the way the drivers use the power, something that the engineers, in turn, must also respond to differently.

Mercedes 'desperate' to start

"Of course, we are desperate to get to the first test so we can see if our simulations are correct," explained the Briton in a YouTube video from the team. "If not, we will be ready to adjust the power unit to make sure the driver gets exactly what he is asking for."
Thomas adds that the new rules have given Mercedes the chance to rethink all aspects of the car and engine, as a completely new chassis is used. To do this, they are working 'hand in hand' with the chassis department to fit the power unit into the chassis in the best way possible, to achieve the fastest overall package.
