Nyck de Vries has not made his last meters in
Formula 1. After a first free practice for
Williams, the
The Telegraph to report that De Vries will also be in action on behalf of Mercedes later this year.
In 2022,
Formula 1 teams are obliged to give at least two sessions to a "rookie". A driver with a maximum of two race weekends behind his name in Formula 1 must be given a chance in a free practice session and in this way the sport tries to give talents more chances. This weekend Juri Vips and De Vries got a chance at
Red Bull Racing and
Williams respectively.
Opportunities for De Vries
De Vries is still hoping for a Formula 1 seat and his performance at Williams has not done badly for that. Although a practice session says little in the end, it was not a bad thing that De Vries was faster than regular driver
Nicholas Latifi over one lap on the soft tire, especially as his position is under heavy fire and De Vries is named as his replacement.
De Vries will not stop at just one test for Williams in 2022, however, as the Dutch media reports that Mercedes will also use De Vries during at least one, but probably even two, free practice sessions. The other reserve driver, Stoffel Vandoorne, is not eligible because he already drove 42 races in F1. De Vries can also still drive a second test for Williams and he is also available as a reserve driver for
McLaren and Aston Martin.
