The Monaco grid will have a 'piece of culture' this weekend, argues Zak Brown regarding McLaren's newly unveiled specially designed retro-livery, which pays homage to Gulf Oil as well as McLaren's long history in motorsport.

“This will be McLaren’s homage to Gulf’s celebrated race car design", Brown begins opposite the Official website of Formula 1. "We’re enormous fans of brave and bold design, and the striking Gulf blue is among the most loved liveries in racing, a celebrated piece of culture which transcends the world of motorsport."

Importance of design

Brown continued: "Design has always been important to McLaren – you see this in everything we do from our return to papaya to our stunning headquarters, the McLaren Technology Centre"

"We’re excited to exhibit this as a team and celebrate our proud association with Gulf in Monaco", the American businessman concluded.

that's a bit of a stretch from brown to attempt to state that this is some seminal moment or cannonical foci in culture. it's kind of comical really, but he is right in that mclaren, at least since ron dennis, has been brilliant in their design ethos; from the technology centre in woking to the visual design of their cars - marlboro, west , papaya orange and now this. i knew a few engineers at mclaren and their garbage cans in their office were designed in-house. dennis took things to an extreme but with those ocd criticisms came some incredible achievements.

Culture? At most a retro livery. I wonder if Mr. Brown has any idea what (real) culture is.
