Daniel Ricciardo put in a fine race in Mexico, barring his contact moment with Yuki Tsunoda. He says that, for once, he did not feel like a 'passenger' in his
McLaren MCL36.
Despite the 10-second time penalty, Ricciardo managed to drive to seventh place and keep it. In doing so, he was helped by good strategy from
McLaren, driving a long first stint before changing to softs.
Ricciardo did not feel a passer of his McLaren
It paints a stark contrast to the race before, where Ricciardo finished in an extremely disappointing 16th place in his much-loved Austin. The Australian states that he often felt more or less a passenger of his McLaren this year, but he did not feel that way at the
Mexican Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver admits he wishes it was like this more often, but that he cherishes the Mexico result.
"I’m happy we’ve got a week off so I can enjoy it for a week," he said in a conversation with
The Race.
"The points finishes, even probably last year, I feel we were normally defending rather than attacking. So just to have an attacking race – especially for me with this car to feel like I can attack a little bit more with it, it’s just a nice feeling."
