When it became known that
Lewis Hamilton had to miss the Grand Prix this weekend due to his coronavirus infection,
Mercedes test and reserve driver
Stoffel Vandoorne seemed the most logical choice as a replacement. It was not to be.
Disappointment
The Belgian driver flew to Bahrain earlier this week, probably thinking he could fill in for Hamilton. Mercedes however chose
George Russell and passed Vandoorne. On Twitter the
Formula E driver reacted for the first time.
“Obviously, I'm disappointed not to get the chance to drive for Mercedes this weekend.”Vandoorne has been present at all Mercedes races throughout the year. “After having spent the year travelling to all F1 races and dedicating so much time, physical training, commitment to this programme... it hurts," said the disappointed but supportive Vandoorne.
Respect for the choice
Despite his disappointment, he respects Mercedes' choice to put
George Russell in the car.
"He has been one of the standout drivers and he fully deserves this opportunity." Vandoorne continues to give it all and thanks everyone for their support.
"It's been great to see.”
