Richard Verschoor is the leader in the Formula 2 championship after two races. The Dutchman returned to MP Motorsport with one goal: to become champion. Will this be his year?

''This was a crazy one. Very fun though, not at all times. I had some eventful moments, but I like racing like this. This is really why I started watching racing at all. Especially that I'm sitting here now with a nice trophy is very nice,'' Verschoor began after the sprint race in Bahrain.

Verschoor returned to MP Motorsport in 2025, where he also competed in Formula 2 in 2021. In 2024, Verschoor finished eighth in the F2 championship, his highest placement to date. However, Verschoor chose a fifth season in the F2 and returned to the top team MP. Surprised that it clicked so quickly with his old team, Verschoor is not.

Does Verschoor stand a chance at the Formula 2 title now?

'I knew MP was a good team,'' said Verschoor after a question from GPblog. 'I have some experience under my belt as well now. And I really loved going back to MP from the first moment. We are communicating very well and I was feeling that inside of the team there was a lot of knowledge. I could really build on my experience together with that of the team.'

'I'm pretty happy that it's paying off at the moment. We did a lot of hard work also to get the car a bit more to my style. I'm just very happy at the moment where we are. Tomorrow I start for P6. To be honest, every race that I'm doing at the moment, I go in very confident because I know that the team is giving me a good car and I try to make the best out of every situation.'

After his second place in the sprint race, Verschoor initially remained second in the championship, but Joshua Durksen was disqualified. With Durksen's point loss, Verschoor took over the lead, which he will aim to defend during the main race on Sunday, starting from sixth place at 13:25 CET.
