Sebastian Vettel has finished ahead of rival Lewis Hamilton in the first session after the summer break. Hamilton was fitted with an upgraded power unit, but it wasn't enough to beat Vettel's Ferrari or Max Verstappen's Red Bull. Daniel Ricciardo spent most of the session parked in the garage with an engine issue. The Australian won't be best pleased as he will continue to use the Renault engine next year. Following the conclusion of the session, boss Christian Horner confirmed Ricciardo had an injector problem. Kimi Raikkonen rounded off the top 4.
Mercedes confirmed both of their drivers will use new, upgraded power units this weekend in Belgium. But it's the Ferrari car that finished ahead this morning. The first practice session post-summer break was incident free under cloudy conditions.
Max Verstappen started the session well for Red Bull and reached 2nd place in the second half of the session. He remained in 2nd as his 1:44.509 proved to be strong enough. He did much better than his team-mate. Ricciardo completed his installation lap but was forced to sit inside the garage for all but the final 2 minutes of the session. He managed to put in a couple of timed laps, but still experienced a few issues. He was fast enough to finish 6th.
Esteban Ocon ensured Racing Point Force India had a positive first session on track. He finished as the 'best of the rest' driver having posted a 1:45.786. He was backed up by team-mate Sergio Perez who finished in 9th. Rivals Renault split the Pink Panthers.
Positive fumes continued to emerge from Pierre Gasly. He finished 11th fastest in the session, putting in another impressive drive as he builds towards his Red Bull career next year. He was around 0.700s faster than team-mate Brendon Hartley.
McLaren put Lando Norris in Fernando Alonso's car for FP1. When the track went silent around the half-way point, both Norris and Vandoorne went out on track in what seemed to be a shoot-out. McLaren hasn't confirmed who will sit alongside Carlos Sainz next season so this could have been a trial run! Norris finished ahead of Vandoorne, but the Belgian driver experienced issued throughout the session. He retired with 5 minutes left after a possible hydraulics issue.
Nico Hulkenberg was first out on the track this morning. He won't be first out on Sunday as he will start from the back of the grid following an engine penalty. 18-year-old Lando Norris soon made his debut to an F1 practice session.
Verstappen posted the first fastest time of 1:46.916 and continued to bang in the laps early on. He picked up plenty of data, making up for lost information from his team-mate.
Raindrops were spotted around the track 20 minutes into the session, but they never developed into anything serious. Kimi Raikkonen was the first Ferrari to edge onto the top of the timesheet but was soon replaced by Sebastian Vettel.
Drivers started performing long distance runs during the second half of the session which resulted in a quiet end to the timesheets.
