Liam Lawson has been called up to replace Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri. Ricciardo will miss the rest of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend due to an injury sustained in an FP2 crash. Lawson has been part of the Red Bull junior team since 2019 and has a lot of potential.

Lawson didn't set the world alight during his time in Formula 3. However, the New Zealander won three races and finished in 5th place. He moved straight to the Formula 2 World Championship in 2021 and won on debut in Bahrain. Driving for Hitech Grand Prix, he finished ninth overall. His performance in DTM was even more impressive, where he finished the Championship in second.

Lawson had a hectic 2022 season. He moved to Carlin, where he won four races in F2 and finished third in the Championship. Lawson was Red Bull's driver replacement during the mandatory rookie replacement practice sessions. He has also driven the AlphaTauri before.

Lawson in 2023

Pierre Gasly's move to Alpine seemed to open the door for Lawson at AlphaTauri, but Helmut Marko wanted to put in Nyck de Vries and keep Yuki Tsunoda. Instead, Lawson is currently competing in the Japanese Super Formula. Earlier in the year, GPblog had an exclusive interview with Lawson where he explained his great start in Japan.

There are currently two rounds left in the Japanese Super Formula 2023, and Lawson can still secure an impressive result. He is currently second, having won three races.
