Daniel Ricciardo sustained an injury during a crash in FP2. Ricciardo fractured his wrist and will not be able to drive the AlphaTauri for the rest of the weekend. Liam Lawson has been called up to replace the injured Australian and will make his F1 debut.
It was a relatively low-speed crash, but the 34-year-old left his hand on the steering wheel for too long. His fellow countryman Oscar Piastri actually caused the incident. At the banked turn three, Piastri spun and hit the wall. Ricciardo wanted to use the same piece of tarmac but had to make a last-minute avoiding action. He then hit the wall himself, and it was immediately apparent something serious had occurred.
It is unclear when Ricciardo will be back in the car, but with the Italian Grand Prix next weekend, it seems like Lawson will need to be prepared to drive again. AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost even suggested that surgery might be required depending on the doctor's report. Ricciardo is himself a replacement in F1 2023. He came in to replace Nyck de Vries, who didn't impress Helmut Marko and his team after 10 races.
