Gerhard Berger believes that Pierre Gasly deserves a second chance at Red Bull Racing. Indeed, according to the Austrian, the opportunity the Frenchman received in 2019 came at the wrong time for the team and the driver.
Gasly's Formula One career has been anything but normal. The AlphaTauri driver made his debut at Toro Rosso at the end of 2017, where he was allowed to drive five races before getting a permanent seat with the team in 2018. There, the young talent made a big impression and was appointed as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo who left Red Bull Racing.
Ricciardo's departure came as a surprise to Red Bull and for Gasly, after more than a year at Toro Rosso, the switch might have been premature as well. That proved to be the case, because after just six months the Frenchman was pushed aside again. Gasly was nowhere near the performance of his teammate and he also ended up off the track on several occasions.
However, at Toro Rosso and later AlphaTauri, Gasly quickly got the hang of things again and even made it onto the podium twice. In 2020 he won the Italian Grand Prix and in 2021 he drove to a third place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. In 2022, Gasly has started strongly again and so Red Bull Racing is also being looked at directly.
Berger states at Motorsport.com that Gasly deserves a second chance. According to the former F1 driver, Gasly's previous opportunity came at exactly the wrong time. He wasn't ready himself, the team wasn't in a good shape yet and Max Verstappen also had to prove himself as a frontrunner. According to Berger this would now be much calmer, because the Dutchman also has a contract 'for ever'.
Berger is therefore curious what Red Bull will do if Gasly turns in a good season in 2022. The question, however, is whether Red Bull will push Sergio Perez aside. In 2021 the Mexican already made a good development and with a pole in Saudi Arabia he also started 2022 well. In that respect it would therefore be strange if Red Bull were to switch drivers.
