As the Italian team have done in the past, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel could have quite easily swapped over the last lap to give Vettel an extra three points. Toto Wolff boss at Mercedes applauded this decision, not because it helped Lewis Hamilton, but because it would have been bad for the sport.

Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello left it until after the final corner before swapping over in 2001 and 2002. Despite having a history of doing such a thing, Wolff remained unsurprised.

"We wouldn't have, and I'm not surprised that they didn't," Wolff told Autosport.

"I think for the sake of the sport and all the fans and the drivers, at that stage in the season, the beginning of July, switching drivers is quite a brutal call."

Vettel's third place was still enough to give him a one-point championship lead over his rival Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton will take part in his home race this coming weekend where he is favourite to pick up his 6th win at the venue and regather the lead in the drivers' standings.
