Toto Wolff has revealed he is "sceptical" during the final stages of the race if one of his Mercedes drivers is pushing for the fastest lap of the race. He is confident someone will crash while doing so and lose a lot of points. So far,
Valtteri Bottas and
Charles Leclerc are the two drivers who have won the award.
“I am always sceptical about our guys putting in the fastest lap because one day someone’s going to end up in the wall and throw away a lot of points. And I hope it’s not going to be a Mercedes," Wolff said in a conversation with
RaceFans. Renault's double failure brought out the safety car in Bahrain and ruined any kind of last-ditch attempt to get the fastest lap point. But even though Wolff remains cautious, he insists it's not only a good thing but an important factor.
“They are points that will count at the end of the championship. Obviously, now, at this point, it doesn’t matter much but what matters is at the end of the championship and we’ve seen many championships finishing with very small margins," he said.
