In a chaotic session in Canada, Carlos Sainz held up Pierre Gasly during the end of Q1, which led to the Frenchman getting knocked out in the first session of Qualifying. Sainz was later penalised with a three-place grid penalty by the stewards. Here is what the two drivers had to say following the incident.
Pierre Gasly, who had to run off the track and got eliminated in Q1, was not happy with Sainz. "I'm absolutely gutted. There is no other word. I think it's unacceptable to have such behaviours on a racetrack. It was a lap that would put us easily in the top six and in the end I almost flew off his rear wing and it completely ruined our qualifying. So I find this completely unfair and unacceptable to drive that way," he told Viaplay.
On the other hand, Sainz did not took the Alpine driver’s words to heart while speaking to Viaplay. "He's probably a bit excited because I got impeded seven times today and I'm not asking for anyone to get banned."
Sainz had an eventful session in qualifying, as he was in the middle of many interesting situations throughout the day. "I will analyse the incident and see, but we were very tight with the flag also the chequered flag was about to fall and we had to get a lap in. So it is one of those situations where it was a bit of every man for himself trying to get across the flag," the Spaniard said.
Sainz was also quick to point out he was not the only one today who held up someone else in these difficult conditions. "As I said I got impeded seven times today and I am not asking for people to get banned. (...) I got impeded in that same chicane one time and I am not here shouting," the Sainz concluded.
