According to
McLaren CEO
Zak Brown, there is a good chance that
Nico Hulkenberg will make the switch to the
IndyCar Series. The former Formula One driver is high on the list of potential candidates at the team and tested the Arrow
McLaren on Monday.
Last month Hulkenberg announced that the chapter
Formula 1 is definitely closed for him. The chances of the German to return to the sport seem gone. Hulkenberg, therefore, wants to focus on other racing classes.
Last Monday, the German participated in an
IndyCar test with Arrow McLaren.
"I think aggressive drivers are rewarded in IndyCar. Nico is one of those drivers who climbs on top of the wheel, as they say here in America. I'm really looking forward to seeing him at work. I think he will enjoy it. Fernando [Alonso] and Marcus [Ericsson] certainly enjoyed it," says
Zak Brown to the Dutch branch of
Motorsport.com.
IndyCar the most interesting option for Hulkenberg
Hulkenberg will have to be patient a little longer though, as McLaren will not be working full time with three cars next season. That won't happen until 2023. "Nico wants to see what IndyCar is all about and we are curious to see how Nico will do. That will all be part of the process once we make decisions regarding that third car and who we let drive it. Nico is high on the list of candidates though," continues Brown.
Hulkenberg, in any case, is looking forward to driving in the IndyCar.
"I haven't been behind the wheel for pretty much a year, since that last-minute stint at the Nürburgring. I'm looking at it and I feel like I still have some good laps in my right foot. I mainly want to discover the car. I have watched the last few races and my heart really lies with the single-seaters. Formula 1 is not going to happen anymore, so then you look for the best possible alternative. IndyCar is definitely an interesting option."
