Oscar Piastri experienced a surprising weekend in his native Melbourne. The Australian managed to score his first points in Formula 1 with an eighth-place finish.
With a 16th place in qualifying, it looked like the Mclaren driver would not score any points in the race. The chaos in the race eventually allowed Piastri to drive himself into the points. A result that surprised the home driver, according to his team's press release: "I didn’t expect that at the start of the day! I’ll definitely take it. Obviously a crazy, crazy race but we stayed in there when it mattered."
The Melbourne-born driver is popular in Australia. Over 400,000 visitors came to the circuit over the weekend. The Mclaren driver is happy with the support: "I’m so happy to get my first points in Melbourne and want to thank all of the home fans and papaya fans for all their support this week."
